Job Summary
The Technology and Breakthrough Innovation team drives the creation of new product solutions by exploiting new technologies to enable innovative product development for the fast-evolving electrical grid. Future electrical grid products and systems must deliver unparalleled user experience, outstanding long-term value, and profitable revenue streams. This role supports the design and development of vacuum interrupter technologies, and the expansion of S&C's long-term capability in this cutting-edge technology.
The responsibilities and traits expected of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
-
Design components and assemblies that address established functional and manufacturing process requirements or specifications, and provide solutions within the context of high quality, short cycle time, low total manufacturing cost.
-
Perform rapid design build test cycles with prototypes parts made from stainless steel, copper, copper alloys and/or ceramics parts.
-
Be responsible for the mechanical and manufacturing aspects of a product from conceptualization through launch and early production.
-
Designing specialized test rigs and performing tests to validate the performance of a design element or the final product.
-
Create accurate visual representations including 3-D solid models of components and assemblies, engineering drawings and renderings using CAD software.
-
Proposing novel design, manufacturing, or assembly ideas that have the potential for IP protection.
-
Actively collaborate with a team that conceptualizes, designs, prototypes and tests unique vacuum interrupters that meet required switchgear specifications and relevant industry standards.
-
Support ongoing production of vacuum interrupters.
-
Support or author the engineering documentation as products develop, launch and stabilize in production.
-
Establish or assist in establishment of various component relationships; geometric, dimensional, physical and material requirements. This can include geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T), surface finishes, mechanical and electrical clearances, joining methods. Calculate and verify stresses and forces in simple elements.
-
Representing S&C to customers, suppliers and technology partners to enhance S&C's reputation for innovation and rigorous design.
-
Procure components from S&C Model Shop or outside suppliers; assemble or direct assembly of prototypes for testing; conduct and monitor various electrical or mechanical tests on samples; record and report results.
To be eligible for this position you must have the following:
-
BS or higher in mechanical or industrial engineering.
-
Must be adept in at least one CAD software, and be willing to learn Solid Edge.
-
Must have familiarity with industrial applications of at least some of the following materials: oxygen free copper, copper alloys, stainless steels, and ceramics.
-
Major plus if you have familiarity and track record of taking stainless steel, copper & copper alloy, and ceramic parts from concept to low volume prototype and high volume production.
-
Familiarity with machining, forming, deep draw stamping, especially in copper and stainless steel. Familiarity with metal spinning a plus.
-
Familiarity with ceramics.
-
2-5 years experience supporting validation along with documentation & drawings as concepts move towards production. Major plus for also suggesting & creating manufacturing concepts & improvements.
-
Major plus if you have experience with cleaning procedures for stainless steel, copper & copper alloys, and ceramic parts
-
Major plus if you have experience with jigging, mechanical assemblies, tolerance stacks and finite element analysis as it pertains to stresses, strains and thermal expansion over ranges of several hundreds of degrees Celsius.
Major Physical Demands:
-
Standing: Occasional, during testing, sample preparation or process observation.
-
Lifting: Occasional light lifting, infrequent lifting up to 50 lbs. for mock-up or test sample preparation.
-
Walking: Occasional walking up to 1 mile within the company facility.
