Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (BI) is currently seeking a talented and innovative Senior/Principal Scientist-Novel Drug Delivery Technologies to join the Material and Analytical Sciences department (MAS). This position offers an exciting opportunity to develop and apply a deep understanding of parenteral formulation principles for diverse advanced therapeutic modalities (e.g., New Chemical Entities (NCEs), Peptides, and ATMPs (Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products). The candidate will contribute during early development by designing formulation strategies and applying drug delivery concepts to enable preclinical and clinical studies. The scientist will be an integral member of the Preformulation and Material Sciences (PFMS) group within MAS, serve on multidisciplinary global project teams/sub-teams and be responsible for proposing strategies to achieve the teams' goals and objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities\:

  • Champion and implement innovative techniques/ideas/concepts to progress BI R&D projects for the delivery of NCEs, Peptides, and ATMPs.
  • Drive strategies that enhance the scientific and business value of the Dept. and extend its scope of influence within BI.
  • Evaluate performance and develop a deep understanding of long-acting injectables and extended-release formulation principles for diverse therapeutic modalities including, but not limited to, liquid crystal, PLGA, hydrogel and nanoparticulate systems.
  • Evaluate novel drug delivery technologies, leverage external consultants and internal subject matter expertise (SME), and establish new internal and external collaborations.
  • Independently take initiative in problem solving and finding solutions to scientific challenges.
  • Lead portfolio and technology development projects and mentor others in areas of expertise.
  • Provide technical leadership and SME in cross-functional formulation, process, and analytical investigations.
  • Prepare technical reports, publications, and oral presentations for timely and effective communications within the company as well as in broader scientific communities.

Principal Scientist Requirements\:

  • Ph.D. in Analytical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Bioengineering, Polymer Science, or related fields with 5+ years of industrial or academic experience in novel drug delivery technologies.

Senior Scientist Requirements\:

  • Ph.D in Analytical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Bioengineering, Polymer Science, or related fields with 0 to 3 years of industrial or academic postdoctoral experience in novel drug delivery technologie
  • Requirements for both levels\:

  • In-depth understanding of novel formulations & process developments, characterization and analytical techniques.
  • Strong scientific and practical knowledge of NCEs, Peptide, and/or ATMP formulations development.
  • Preferred with an understanding of delivery vehicle technologies/dosage forms and API-vehicle interactions, applicable to NCEs, Peptides, and other drugs/biologics.
  • Critical thinking and troubleshooting skills to help establish viable solutions to ongoing research issues/topics.
  • Excellence in collaboration, interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate effectively via oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Strong motivation to explore new technologies and concepts.
