Zurich is currently searching for an AVP, Project Portfolio Director to work out of our North American headquarters in Schaumburg, IL and will be a hybrid role (i.e., a combination of onsite and remote work).  As a key member of our IT Portfolio Planning and Delivery leadership team, the Project Portfolio Director holds both leadership and management roles, leading a team of both junior and senior level project managers and will report directly to the head of the organization.

This role will provide mentorship and coaching, encouraging training and continuous improvement. The Project Portfolio Director embodies and enables an agile culture, fosters communities of practice, provides community engagement opportunities, and offers career development guidance.

 

In addition to leading a team of resources, the Project Portfolio Director may lead highly complex and strategic transformation initiatives. This role will be responsible for leading their project team from business case definition through successful implementation.

 

The Project Portfolio Director will also be responsible for recruiting, developing, and retaining talent, as well as ensuring the staff has the skills and capabilities to meet business needs while developing workforce strategy to meet the organization's current and future needs through developing, hiring, and/or sourcing talent.  Additionally, the candidate will manage talent, playing a key role in performance management and compensation processes, role and competency definition, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.  The Director will also be tasked at building strong working relationships with IT and business leaders to ensure the team meets expectations and contribute to achievement of business goals.  This will include managing resource allocation across teams to maximize business impact of resources and ensure each team has the skills and capabilities needed to achieve its objectives

 

From a project leadership prospective, the Project Portfolio Director will have other key responsibilities such as defining and structuring initiatives to align with business objectives/strategy and will act as a thought partner with key business leaders to clearly articulate the business case and clear, measurable outcomes. The Director will create a work plan and staffing profile for project activities, iterations and/or phases, and arrange for recruitment or assignment of needed resources and facilitate operational transformation in addition to leading process reengineering and participating in vendor management and procurement processes.  The Project Portfolio Director will also be responsible for providing oversight of initiatives and clear communication of overall health and status and conduct risk assessments and execute needed mitigations while exercising financial acumen through the creation and management of project/program budgets.

 

Lastly, the preferred candidate will have experience utilizing Agile-Scrum delivery methodologies, communicating with senior and C-level suite executives, and leading diverse, cross-functional teams.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree and 7 or more years of experience in the Information Technology area

            OR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 9 or more years of experience in the Information Technology area

            OR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 7 or more years of experience in the Information Technology area

            AND

  • Experience with IT development and/or maintenance

  • Knowledge of IT standards and policy

  • People management experience

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree preferred

  • Agile Certification preferred

  • Project Management Institute Project Management Professional certification

  • Project management experience

  • P&C Insurance, Financial Services experience

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Organizational and analytical skills

  • Ability to lead in a team environment

  • Vendor management experience
